Putting data governance on the university leadership agenda

Kellerton worked across Northumbria University to assess data maturity and develop a tailored governance framework and roadmap.

The problem

Northumbria needed a university-wide framework to support the data lifecycle, improve data quality and manage information risks, while enabling projects that depended on joined-up data.

What we did

Kellerton engaged senior colleagues, data owners and technical specialists across professional services to understand the university’s information needs and existing practices. The work assessed maturity across 20 elements of ownership, management, quality and governance, and set out roles, policies, procedures, tools and implementation priorities.

What the work produced

  • A detailed maturity assessment and tailored data governance framework
  • A prioritised roadmap covering roles, policies, procedures and supporting tools
  • Greater senior leadership attention to data and alignment of previously separate activities
  • A framework that became a key pillar of the university’s 2022 data strategy
